Lakshadweep Island Package Unwrapped: A Newlywed’s Experience in Agatti, Bangaram, and Kalpitty

In December 2021, my partner and I embarked on a honeymoon that was nothing short of a dream. We chose Lakshadweep Island, a cluster of islands known for their untouched beauty and serene beaches, as our destination. This travelogue is a reflection of our incredible journey through this tropical paradise. At that time, it was not as famous as compared to today. And thanks to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and can’t take away credit from Maldivian ministers. Lakshadweep Island is now a buzzword in the digital world, so just think about jotting down my travelogue.

Geographical Overview

Lakshadweep Island, an archipelago of 36 atolls and coral reefs in the Arabian Sea, is a place where the blues of the sky and the ocean merge. I was mesmerized by its pristine beauty the moment we landed.

The Journey to Lakshadweep Island

Travel Options

Our journey began with a flight from Kochi to Agatti(Airpot of Lakshadweep Island). The aerial view of the islands was a prelude to the beauty that awaited us. I was on an adrenaline high when the flight was about to land. Agatti’s airstrip is a marvel in itself, a narrow strip of tarmac that seems to float amidst the endless expanse of the ocean. It is one of the few airstrips in the world flanked by water on both sides, giving passengers the unique sensation of landing on a runway suspended over the sea. The approach is both exhilarating and a bit daunting, especially for first-time visitors. Pilots maneuver with precision, showcasing their skill in handling the aircraft on such a unique airstrip. As the wheels touch down, there’s often a collective sigh of relief mixed with excitement among the passengers.

Stepping out of the plane, the air is balmy and filled with the scent of the sea. The sound of the waves gently lapping against the shores can be heard, a soothing welcome to this remote paradise. The view is spectacular – the runway, a narrow strip of civilization, juxtaposed against the untamed natural beauty of the island. The ocean’s hues, a gradient of blues and greens, stretch as far as the eye can see, and the sky above is a vast dome of clear blue.

The Agatti Airport of Lakshadweep Island landing experience is more than just a flight; it’s a dramatic entry into a world that feels untouched and pure. It’s a reminder of the delicate balance between human engineering and nature’s grandeur. For many, this landing is the start of an unforgettable journey in one of the most pristine and secluded parts of the world, where the hustle of modern life gives way to the serene rhythms of nature.

You can also experience the journey by cruise from Kochi to Kavaratti.

Things to remember: Always book a complete package for Lakshadweep Island, it requires a permit to visit till I am writing this. It is not like other locations, prior booking will save you lots of time. If you have taken a package, no worries! coming out of the airport will be smooth. Your mobile network will be retired once you reach, except BSNL. So, carry a hard copy of the document suggested by your travel partner. And don’t worry, the person who is coming to pick you, up will find you.

Best Time to Visit

December, with its pleasant weather, was perfect. The Lakshadweep Island were a paradise, with gentle breezes and a comfortable climate. The ideal time to visit Agatti Island is between November and March, a period when the island is at its most enchanting. During these months, the weather is exceptionally pleasant, marked by clear blue skies and a comfortable temperature range, making it perfect for exploring the island’s natural beauty and engaging in outdoor activities. This period avoids the heavy monsoons that typically occur from June to September, where the seas can be rough, and the rainfall might restrict outdoor activities and travel to and from the island. The calm seas from December to March are ideal for snorkeling, diving, and exploring the vibrant coral reefs, as the underwater visibility is at its peak. Additionally, the lower humidity and the gentle sea breeze during these months enhance the overall experience, whether you’re lounging on the beaches or indulging in water sports.

Agatti Island: A Gateway to Paradise

Our first stop was Agatti Island, often regarded as the gateway to Lakshadweep Island. My stay at a cottage in Agatti was an experience that transcended all expectations, a serene retreat that seemed to have been conjured from a dream. Nestled on the edge of this idyllic island, the cottage was a masterpiece of rustic charm blended with comfort. Each morning, I was greeted by the breathtaking spectacle of the sunrise, visible from one of the cottage windows. This daily ritual, where the sky painted itself in hues of orange and pink, was a moment of pure tranquility, allowing me to feel deeply connected to the natural splendor of Agatti. As the day unfolded, the cottage served as a perfect haven, with its cozy interiors and views of the endless ocean that stretched into the horizon. Then, as evening approached, a different window offered a front-row seat to the sunset. This spectacle was equally mesmerizing, with the sky transforming into a canvas of purples and reds, and the sun dipping into the ocean, casting a golden glow over the water. The rhythmic sound of the waves provided a soothing backdrop, enhancing the magical atmosphere. This unique feature of the cottage, offering views of both the sunrise and sunset, was beyond imagination, turning each day into a celebration of nature’s wonders. It was not just a place to stay; it was a realm where time stood still, and the beauty of Agatti Island could be absorbed in its most pristine and undisturbed form.

Day 2: Bangaram Island – An Untouched Beauty

Day 2 of my Lakshadweep Island adventure unfolded with a new surge of excitement as we set off from Agatti to explore the enchanting Bangaram Island, a mere 12 kilometers away. After a hearty breakfast, we made our way to the jetty, where a boat awaited to whisk us across the azure waters. The journey itself was a visual treat, with the sea changing its hues from deep blue to emerald green as we neared Bangaram. just before arrival, the boat had been stopped, and we could see reefs at the surface. We asked to go into the water, yes! for snorkeling. With little struggle, I wear the gear and see the beauty inside by floating on water. And, I was like, just wow, nature at its best. reefs structure was like, some monument ruins, and fishes in every color, you could imagine. When I feed bread, a bunch of fish just wrapped around my palm, seems like I was holding a rainbow.

The day was dedicated to experiencing the underwater marvels of Bangaram. Donning snorkeling gear, I plunged into the inviting waters. It was like entering a different realm, where time slowed down and the outside world faded away. The underwater spectacle was mesmerizing – vibrant coral reefs teeming with life, schools of colorful fish darting through the water, and the occasional shy turtle gliding gracefully. Each moment spent snorkeling was an intimate encounter with the ocean’s hidden treasures, revealing a world that was both surreal and overwhelmingly beautiful.

The water was exceptionally clear, offering an unobstructed view of the marine ballet that unfolded beneath the surface. The experience was not just about the visual splendor; it was a profound connection with nature, feeling the pulse of the ocean and its inhabitants in a way that was both humbling and exhilarating. As the day progressed, each dive seemed to uncover new wonders, etching memories that would last a lifetime.

As the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over Bangaram, I reflected on the day’s experiences. It was more than just a day of snorkeling; it was a journey into the heart of the ocean, a reminder of the intricate and beautiful tapestry of life that thrives beneath the waves. While coming back, from dusk to dawn, vibrant colors surrounded us, sun was setting with a palette of colors.

Day 3 – Scuba Diving

Day 3 on the enchanting Agatti Island dawned with a mix of excitement and a flutter of nervousness, as today was the day we were to embark on our first scuba diving adventure. The anticipation of exploring the depths of the ocean had us both exhilarated and slightly apprehensive. Neither of us knew quite what to expect; the thought of delving into the unknown depths stirred a sense of adventure, yet the uncertainty of our ability to do it gnawed at us.

As we geared up, our instructor’s reassuring words and the detailed briefing provided a comforting blanket of confidence. With our hearts pounding, we took the plunge, slowly descending into the underwater realm that lay hidden beneath the waves of Agatti. The initial anxiety melted away the moment we were submerged in the serene silence of the ocean. It was like entering a different world, one where gravity held no sway and life floated effortlessly around us.

Surrounded by the vibrant tapestry of coral reefs, teeming with an array of fish in every conceivable color, we were utterly mesmerized. The experience was surreal, akin to being part of a living, breathing painting that constantly evolved with each swim of a fish or sway of the coral. Schools of tiny, iridescent fish darted around us, while larger, more majestic creatures regarded us with curious eyes, adding to the thrill of the experience.

Every moment underwater felt like a discovery, unveiling a world that was so pristine and untouched, it seemed almost dreamlike. The nervousness we had felt earlier was replaced by a sense of awe and a profound connection with the marine life around us. As we resurfaced, the world seemed different, as if we had been let in on a magnificent secret that lay beneath the waves.

Back on the water’s surface, we exchanged looks of exhilaration and disbelief. Words were unnecessary; our wide-eyed expressions spoke volumes. We had done it, conquered our apprehensions, and in doing so, had experienced something truly out of this world. This scuba diving adventure was not just about exploring the ocean; it was a journey of self-discovery, a testament to the wonders that lie beyond our comfort zones, waiting to be explored. As the boat headed back to the island, we sat in silent contemplation, forever changed by the beauty and serenity of the underwater world of Agatti.

Kalpitty Island

Rejuvenated from our scuba diving adventure and a restful break, we savored a delightful lunch, the flavors of the local cuisine still dancing on our tongues as we prepared for the next leg of our journey. Our destination was Kalpitty Island, a lesser-known gem in the Lakshadweep Island archipelago. It was just my partner and me, accompanied by a local boatman whose knowledge of the islands was as deep as the waters we sailed.

As our boat sliced through the crystal-clear waters, the boatman regaled us with tales of Kalpitty, painting a picture of an island untouched by time, a place where nature reigned supreme. The journey was scenic with a glass boat, one can see the surface of the sea and its creatures, with the waterway skirting along the Agatti airport runway, offering a unique perspective of planes taking off and landing, a juxtaposition of human engineering against the backdrop of natural splendor.

Upon reaching Kalpitty, it was as if we had stepped into a world that was far removed from the hustle of everyday life. The island, small and intimate, was a haven of tranquility. We walked and took a circle of the whole island in 90 minutes. Its pristine surroundings were a testament to nature’s artistry. The boatman pointed out the diverse birdlife, explaining how this tiny island was a sanctuary for numerous species, some of which were unique to the region.

Upon returning, it was like sailing into a colorful sky, from dawn to dusk. The journey back to Agatti was quiet, each of us lost in our thoughts, carrying a piece of Kalpitty in our hearts.

Starry Skies and Birthday Surprises: A Lakshadweep Island Night to Remember

Upon our return from the serene Kalpitty, the evening unfolded into a magical celebration under the celestial tapestry of the Lakshadweep Island night sky. It was not just any evening; it was the night of my birthday, and the universe seemed to conspire to make it unforgettable. As the sun dipped below the horizon, leaving a trail of crimson and gold, a surprise awaited me – a candlelight dinner, meticulously arranged on the beach.

The setting was straight out of a dream, with a table for two nestled on the soft sand, surrounded by flickering candles that cast a warm, golden glow. Above us, the sky was a canvas of inky blue, dotted with glimmering stars, our companions for the evening. The rhythmic sound of the waves provided a soothing symphony, while the gentle sea breeze whispered secrets from distant lands.

As we settled into this enchanting ambiance, got my cake. The witty banter with my partner, interspersed with laughter and shared anecdotes, added a sparkle to the evening. It felt as though the stars themselves were eavesdropping, twinkling a little brighter with each burst of our laughter.

The surreal beauty of the setting, the delicious food, and the company of my partner made the evening more than just a birthday celebration; it was a festival of the senses, a night where time seemed to stand still. As we dined under the starlit sky, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude. Here, in this remote corner of the world, embraced by the ocean and under the watchful gaze of the stars, I celebrated not just another year of life, but the joy of living itself.

The night drew to a close, but the memories of this birthday under the stars at Agatti would remain etched in my heart forever. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best gifts come not in boxes, but in moments, fleeting yet infinitely precious.

Day 4 – Parting Glances: Reflections and Memories from Agatti

Day 4 arrived with a bittersweet feeling, as it was time to bid farewell to the enchanting Agatti Island, a place that had swiftly become a treasure trove of memories. As we packed our bags, each item seemed to carry a story, a reminder of the adventures and moments that had filled our days here. The first-time thrill of scuba diving, where we embraced the mysteries of the deep blue sea, lingered vividly in our minds. The vibrant coral reefs and the playful dance of the marine life were more than just sights; they were experiences that had expanded our world.

Then there was the unforgettable birthday celebration under the stars, a romantic escapade that felt like it was lifted from the pages of a fairy tale. Dining by candlelight on the beach, with the universe as our canopy, was not just romantic; it was a moment of profound connection, both with each other and with the cosmos.

As we made our way back to Agatti Airport, our eyes twinkled, not just with the reflection of the Lakshadweep Island’s sun-kissed waters, but with the light of cherished memories. The Lakshadweep Island offered us a blend of adventure, romance, and soulful experiences, each etched deeply in our hearts. The goodbye was not just to a location on the map, but to a chapter of our lives that we would revisit in stories and dreams for years to come. Agatti was more than a destination; it had been a journey, a vibrant tapestry of moments that we had lived and loved, a narrative of life that we would carry with us as we headed home.

Travel Tips and Guidelines

Dos and Don’ts

  1. We learned to respect the local customs quickly. Adhering to guidelines like not littering and avoiding interference with the coral reefs was crucial.
  2. Don’t bring anything from the place, like coral, reef, sea cucumber, nothing means nothing, not even sand. It will lead you to the problem.
  3. You can plan your travel by yourself as well, but I would suggest, taking some package and enjoying the place. It includes stays, food, island transfer, snorkeling, monument or museum visits, and cabs.
  4. You can check, I have booked from here
